To illustrate this process he uses an example of operational research the stock control model at the National Coal Board. Various shots of equipment used by the Coal Board, cutting machines, conveyor belts etc., The Alloa central stores and goods in storage. C L Templeman, Director General of Purchasing and Stores Department describes how computerisation of stock control records came about. The computer room at Alloa. Stock cards being fed into the computer. Stewart Gartside discusses how a simplified model of stock flow can be constructed and how restraints on this can be incorporated into the model. Mrs Elsie Cropper, Operational Research Executive, discusses the two costs to be considered, order cost and holding cost. Shots of large capital equipment in the stores. Stewart Gartside examines the graphs created by these constraints. When combined they have a minimum point. Using algebra, he arrives at a formula which will give an optimum solution to the stock control model. He checks this solution against his intuition and then against reality. He then wants to improve the simplified model. Mrs Cropper explains what other factors are taken into account in the more complex Coal Board model. Stewart then explains how these additions could be incorporated into the simple model, in order to bring it closer to reality. C L Templeman describes the benefits brought to the N.C.B. ordering process by the introduction of the computerised mathematical model. |
