Description
This programme examines part of the workings of a deep-sea container berth and shows how a simulation model of it can be built up. The student will already have been introduced to the basic ideas o...f simulation through the text of the first Unit. The programme shows how to develop a more complex and more realistic simulation model, and introduces the student to the compute simulation program which s/he can use on the Student Computing Service.

Footage description: Lyn Jones introduces the programme. Jones draws a graph which shows the ratio of costs to container throughout in a given berth. He uses the graph to show what is meant by economic capacity of a berth. Jones uses a set of blocks which simulate containers to demonstrate that the cost curve rises as throughout of containers increases. Jones with a graph showing container throughput in time. He explains that simulation must be done on an hour by hour basis as costs are related to peak container movements. Shots of a container park. Jones models the park in the studio using the blocks to simulate the containers. He arranges them in order similar to that shown in the shot above. Shot of a diagram of a container port showing variables which must be considered when modelling the system. Jones discusses the rules by which the variables in his model are manipulated. 4 flow diagrams are used as visual aids. They represent the life cycles of the variables. (Crane operation, lorry loading/ unloading etc.) Jones explains how the activities represented in the flow diagrams are co-ordinated. He explains the differences between conditional and time dependent events. Jones uses a large diagram which can co-ordinate the variables for his manual simulation of the system. He moves a slide over the diagram and this shows all the container ports activities for each hour of the day. Jones explains how the model simulates the movements of containers through the container park at each event shown in the model above. He models customs clearance, ships unloading, container consolidation and enters the results on the slide/diagram. Shots of a computer print out, showing the events generated by the simulation at various times of the day.
