Description
This programme is about the basic function of a time base and in particular the home kit design study 2 "Time Base Generator", The treatment is at the level of block diagram representatio...n of the circuit and its performance is discussed and demonstrated using a large scale display board.

Footage description: Gary Alexander demonstrates how an image on a rotating disc can be made to appear stationary when illuminated by a stroboscope matched to its frequency. He shows how a signal is displayed on an oscilloscope, using an x-y chart plotter to illustrate fly back and effects of nonsynchronisation. Gaby Smol demonstrates the function of a trigger circuit in a timebase, using a large voltmeter to display the critical input voltage levels and an oscilloscope monitoring the output (on-off) levels. Using a block diagram he explains how the circuit is completed with a resetting circuit in the feedback loop from the output of the ramp generator to the input of the trigger circuit. Gary Alexander uses a board to explain how an input signal can be used to trigger the ramp start. Smol demonstrates this on the oscilloscope. Finally Gaby and Gary explain how the timebase can run synchronised to the input signal, using the stroboscope demonstration again to explain drift.
