Footage description: Pip Youngman demonstrates the Nozzle home experiment (HE 10). This sets out to confim Bernoulli's equation for flow through a nozzle. Paul Minton uses graphics and a board for his calculations to apply the force-momentum equation to a control volume enclosing a nozzle. He calculates the external force required to support the nozzle. Peter Lucas describes an alternative method for analysing the flow of a fluid through a nozzle. He constructs a graph of static pressure measurements taken using piezo-tubes Lucas demonstrates that the area under the graph is equal to the force exerted by the flowing fluid in the nozzle and works out an answer which corresponds to that worked out by Paul Minton above. Lucas uses a model of a nozzle to aid his discussion. Paul Minton sums up by considering which approach would be most useful in any particular fluid flow situation.
