Footage description: Pip Youngman demonstrates some aspects of the Water Wheel home experiment. Still shots of Frank Whittle and archive film of a Gloster Whittle E 28 in flight. Recorded commentary by Whittle explains how he came to build his jet engine. Peter Lucas at the Rolls Royce collection in the Derby Industrial Museum introduces the programme. Dick Pefley, with a jet engine having cutaway sections, explains how jet engines work. He points out the engine's various components. Peter Lucas and Dick Pefley look at several engines in the museum as they trace the development of the jet. They look at the Derwent Welland, Trent and Conway engines pointing out elements in each which made them more efficient. Dick Pefley and John Coplin (Rolls Royce RB 211 designer) examine and discuss various aspects of the RB 211 fan jet engine. They look first at a cross section diagram of the whole engine with Coplin explaining how it works. He goes on to list the design objectives with which he worked. With the aid of graphics, Pefley and Coplin explain the advantages of by-pass air in the RB 211 and then discuss what the proper bypass ratio should be. Pefley and Coplin explain the need for high pressure ratios in the compressors and the effect of compressor tip clearance on engine efficiency in the RB 211. Pefley and Coplin, with the aid of graphics and part of a turbine, discuss the design of turbine blades for the RB 211. Coplin explains which aspects of the RB 211 design have given him the most pleasure. Pefley briefly sums up.
