Footage description: Film shots of a Hy-Mac 580 being driven inside the factory. Peter Lucas (voice over) introduces the programme. Richard Fendrich with a six cylinder diesel engine from the Hy-Mac 580. He explains how the engine works and points out some of the parts. Animated diagrams showing the diesel cycle are also used. Fendrich describes the chemical changes which take place inside the cylinders of the engine He analyses its efficiency by means of an energy balance from an engineering test run. Fendrich points out some of the areas in which energy is lost (cooling, etc). Peter Lucas and John Cannell introduce the second engine to be examined - the 5 cylinder hydraulic slewing motor. Cannell points out where, on the Hy-Mac 580, it is located and how it operates. Peter Lucas uses a cut-away slewing motor to explain how the motor works. He points out the various component parts. Lucas uses a simple model of one slewing motor cylinder to demonstrate the point of maximum torque and also the two minima. The torque curve for the slewing motor is developed on an animated graph. Commentary by Peter Lucas. From this graph, he calculates the output power and checks this against calculations derived from a PV indicator diagram (shown). Lucas goes on to explain why the motor is not 100% efficient. Dick Fendrich explains how the slewing motor can be used in reverse to provide a braking system for the Hy-Mac 58O. Peter Lucas very briefly sums up.
