Description
The aim of this programme is to show some examples of machine tools, their environment and control. To show the dynamic operation of three types of position transducers (discussed in detail in Unit... 7) in three machine tool applications. A vertical drilling machine (specially modified to do milling operations), a lathe, and a five-axis contour milling machine.

Footage description: | Shot of a Molins System 24 five axis contour milling machine. David Crecraft at the National Engineering Laboratory, East Kilbride, Scotland, introduces the programme. The programme will examine the dynamic operation of position transducers in machine tool applications. David Crecraft and J.W. Bruce with a vertical drilling machine which has been modified to do milling work. Bruce explains how the machine works. Bruce points out the position transducers on the machine. He explains how they work and how signals are monitored. Bruce starts the machine to demonstrate the transducer operation. Signals from the transducers are monitored on an oscilloscope screen. Bruce and Crecraft at the machine control console. Bruce explains how the machine is controlled by computer produced punched paper tape which is fed into the control console. Shots of machine in operation (shots of machine and control console). Shots of machine carrying out a milling operation. product. They discuss the possibility of machining on two axes simultaneously. Shots of the machine in operation on two axes simultaneously. It machines the OU symbol from a sheet of laminated plastic. Shots of a lathe in action. The work piece is fixed and the cutting tool moves in 2 axes with respect to it. Hughes shows a component similar to the one the lathe is machining. He explains how the lathe works and points out the transducers for the X and Y axes. Hughes with a synchro-resolver (the position transducer for this machine). He uses a model of a synchro-resolver to demonstrate how a change in armature coil position changes the phase of the output signal. The Transducer output is displayed in digital form as the lathe operates again. Crecraft and Hughes with a Molins System 24 five axis contour milling machine. Hughes explains how the machine works and points out the linear position transducers (reflecting line diffraction gratings). Shots of the Molins in operation. |
