Description
Role Playing exercises are part of the "home kit" students are asked to do. They reveal a great deal about several areas of the course: 1. The development and resolution of goal conflicts... - the subject matter of column 1 of the course matrix. 2. The flow of information - column 2 of the matrix 3. The development of behaviour and the effects of particular structures and organisational variables on that behaviour - column 3 of the matrix. Extracts of three different groups of Course Team members playing the same exercise are shown. The briefs for the various roles were only seen for a few minutes before the recording took place. The extracts illustrate: 1. The different way the players perceive their roles and the different paces of the interaction in different groups playing the same exercise. The information flow and they analyse how effective different people are in extracting information and controlling the meeting. 3. The ease with which people can adopt roles and how these roles tend to be very stereotyped. The programme ends with a long extract from a second exercise. This provides an opportunity to follow the ideas drawn from the first exercise in a different context.

Footage description: John Beishon introduces the programme which consists of a series of role playing exercises by members of the course team. He explains the purpose of the exercises. 4 members of the course team participate in a role playing exercise. One plays a manager and the rest factory operatives in a chemical plant. Something has gone wrong and the manager has called the three operatives together for a meeting to discover the fault. Beishon sums up this exercise. He relates it to the social conflict systems chart which was used in the previous Programme. The same role playing exercise is done again but with different participants. Beishon compares the behaviour of the two groups. He points out the differences and similarities. Same role playing exercise again with a different group of participants. Beishon again sums up. The role playing exercise continues with different participants. Role playing exercise continues with different participants. Role playing exercise continues with different participants. Beishon compares the interaction between the participants of the three exercises above and then sums up. Beishon introduces a role playing exercise in which role perception is examined. The same person is shown in two different roles. 1, as a factory operative and 2, as a university department head. Beishon introduces another role playing exercise. This time members of the course team play junior and senior university teaching staff and students. The interaction centres around a conflict over exams and they are discussing this at a meeting. Shots of meeting in progress with commentary. Beishon points out the various ways which role is perceived in the role playing exercises shown on this programme and discusses the difficulties this can cause. The above exercise is continued.
