Footage description: John Beishon introduces the programme. Beishon begins by looking at the problem of handling data in the operational area of a system. He has with him some machined parts and uses these to point out that in the operational situation, measurements can be defined and made with accuracy. Beishon then discusses the problem of discovering trends in the measurements which may put the product outside a specified tolerance. He uses several charts, some animated, to demonstrate how trends are plotted. Beishon then describes a statistical technique, the Q-sum technique, which will aid in interpreting the trend in the measurements. Beishon next looks at the people management area of a system. He sits inside an older type second class British Rail carriage as he talks. Beishon points out the difficulties of measuring and evaluating people's attitudes in a problem such as finding out what sort of railway carriages passengers preferred. Still shots of several different kinds of British Rail carriages while he talks. Beishon briefly describes the Semantic Differential technique, a statistical technique which is used to determine people's attitudes. Diagrams aid his discussion. Andrew West explains how effective the Semantic Differential technique is for determining people's attitudes. He points out the problems involved using the British Rail carriage preference as his example. Beishon joins in the discussion. Beishon next moves to the socio-economic aspects of the system. He introduces Gordon Heald. Gordon Heald, director of a large survey research company, describes the types of attitude surveys carried out by his company. He discusses the sorts of questions asked and points out the problems of collecting and analysing data. Heald uses consumer confidence measurements for consumer durables as an example. Beishon sums up.
