Description
The programme aims to set up a model of a design process, to describe and illustrate one particular case history and to compare the two. The student should be able to use such a model in analysing ...other design situation, and to appreciate the implications of design decisions particularly in generating further problems.

Footage description: Robin Roy introduces the programme which will look at wheelchair and car transport design for disabled persons. Film shots of Nancy Robertson, a disabled person, leaving her home in a wheelchair. She is shown getting into her 3 wheeled invalid car and then driving through the town. Commentary by Mary Hope discusses some of the problems encountered by disabled persons with their wheelchairs and cars. Robin Roy with a model of the design process. He points out the various components of the model and explains how it works. He applies the model to the case of Nancy Robertson above. Ray Gray, Institute of Advanced Studies at Manchester Polytechnic, explains how his team designed a powered transport package for disabled persons. He claims that this system is an improvement on present systems. Shots of Ray Gray getting out of a standard wheelchair and into a 3 wheeled invalid car. Gray continues his discussion. Robin Roy enters the design elements, as brought out by Gray, on his design process model. Ray Gray goes on to describe the standard manufactured items which were used to produce his team's electric wheelchair. (standard office chair, windscreen wiper motor, etc.) He then shows the assembled electric wheelchair and explains how it is operated. Robin Roy continues to enter design elements from the above on his design process model. Ray Gray with the chassis of his team's prototype invalid car. It is manufactured from standard components (see above). Gray explains how entrance to the car is gained and Nancy Robertson demonstrates by entering in her wheelchair. Robin Roy enters the car's design elements, as brought out above, on his design process model. Nancy Robertson, Peter Large and Elizabeth Robertson (two invalids and an occupational therapist) discuss and evaluate the chair/car system developed at Manchester Polytechnic. Their discussion also covers the more general aspects of invalid mobility.
