Footage description: John Naughton introduces the programme from the British Steel Corporation's headquarters building in London. He lists three separate dimensions of BSC's problem of properly allocating production among various manufacturing plants in the country. Peter Evans, BSC Development Planning Manager explains what is meant by steel plate and where it is used. John Naughton and David Brent discuss the use of linear programming to simulate the plate manufacturing process and the constraints which operate. Some film shots showing steel plate production from the film "Hot rolling of steel" are shown at intervals during the discussion. Brent explains what the LP model was trying to optimise and how this was done. Naughton and Brent discuss the advantages of using linear programming techniques for modelling processes at BSC. John Naughton and Peter Evans examine the method used by BSC to arrive at a plan for determining its future plate-making capacity. They explain how the 'Plate Working Party' was set up and how it formulated initial strategies. Naughton defines some of the systems jargon which is used in the programme. Peter Evans explains what were some of the considerations which had a bearing on the feasibility of any strategy considered by the working party. John Naughton and Peter David explain why the model was so useful to the working party when they were deliberating alternative strategies. John Naughton, David Brent and Peter Evans discuss the ways in which the model was used to arrive at the most profitable strategy. David Brent and John Naughton discuss the cost of the simulation. Peter Evans explains what happened to the Working Party's report and how its recommendations were modified. John Naughton sums up.
