Description
The programme which was recorded in Liverpool, looks at two community groups working with print and examines through discussion with the chief protagonists, their aims and objectives. The group in ...Liverpool is called Impact (Independent Media and Community Trust) and was founded by Chrissy Maher who had started a community newspaper in the Tubrook area of Liverpool called The Bugle. It concentrates on printing, part commercial and part for community communication such as new sheets, posters and information leaflets. The second group is in London and is called Centerprise that was founded 4 years ago as a community youth centre and a community bookshop. They also founded a publishing project which seeks to record either by soliciting manuscripts or by taping, peoples experience of living and working in the Hackney area. These activities are described by Ken Worpole who is in charge of the publishing project. The programme also looks at some of the other activities of Impact such as teaching on a multilith printing machine, discussion on the lay-out of the Liverpool News, a paper started by Impact for those who find reading difficult. Other activities at Centerprise such as the coffee shop and play group are illustrated by still photographs.

Footage description: The opening sequence shows a group of schoolchildren being shown how to operate a printing machine belonging to the Impact Print Shop in Liverpool. In voice-over Nancy Thomas briefly explains the services Impact offers its local community, and describes its paper for adult illiterates entitled The Liverpool News. Members of Impact are seen discussing the layout of the Liverpool News. They are then introduced to Ken Worpole of Centreprise, a community print centre based in Hackney. They explain how they make their printing machinery available to the public, and how the Liverpool News is produced and distributed. Chrissie Maher explains how Impact is financed. Worpole describes the set-up at Centreprise to the Impact staff. Stills of the Hackney Centre are displayed. He discusses future developments at the Centre with Chrissie Maher. Maher shows Worpole the nursery at Impact. The nursery looks after children while their mothers shop or use the printing facilities. Explanatory comments in voice-over from Nancy Thomas. The remainder of the programme consists of a discussion between the staffs of Impact and Centreprise. They suggest what kinds of services their community centres should offer and compare the present facilities at each centre. Still photographs of the centres illustrate their remarks.
