Footage description: The programme opens with film of the Leicestershire countryside near Coalville. In voice-over Roger Hart observes that our experience of our environment is a result of bodily and sensory manipulation. A film sequence shot in Vermont, U.S.A. shows a group of children playing in woods. They construct a play-house, and in voice-over Hart comments on the need children have to construct models of adult environments, and on the different roles performed by boys and girls in this construction. Much of this sequence is without commentary. A second film sequence of children's play in Vermont begins with an example of mapping. A group of children play with toy cars, and in voice-over Hart explains how the play symbolises environments, known or imagined. A sequence without commentary shows two young children at play, in order to demonstrate how much of children's play is imaginative. Over film of a housing estate at Coalville, Leicestershire, Hart describes the kinds of materials children require for creative play. He concludes that these needs should be considered when planning children's environments. Hart visits a school, where the camera observes children at play. Boys are seen building a tree-house, girls furnishing a den. Two boys are seen exploring rocks. In voice-over Hart ends the programme with advice for planners and for parents, both of whom should cater for children's need for construction and adventure. Credits.
