Footage description: Adrian Demaid, at Cranfield, examines the wing of the Jupiter man powered aircraft. He points out the various structural design features. Demaid, still at Cranfield, goes on to examine the structural features of the wing of Mercury, another man powered aircraft. Frank Vann lists the basic sets of information which a designer would need to design an aircraft wing. Vann looks in detail at the wing structure of Puffin I. He uses a model of part of the wing to show its interior structure. Vann goes on to look in detail at the wing structure of Puffin II. He again uses a model of part of the wing to show its interior structure. Adrian Demaid looks, very briefly, at a model section of the Open University man powered aircraft (OUMPA) wing. Nick Reid performs a tension test on a sample of spruce from the OUMPA wing. He explains how the testing apparatus works and then examines the resulting force/displacement curve. Nick Reid next explains how to test a sample jof wood for strength in compression. He does not actually perform the test but examines a force/displacement curve from such a test. Nick. Reid demonstrates a shear panel test on a sample of balsa skin from the OUMPA wing. He explains how the testing apparatus works and then examines the force/displacement curve for this test. Adrian Dentaid tests a section of the balsa and spruce main spar of the OUMPA wing to destruction.
