Footage description: Ken Reynolds, inside the cab of a class 87 locomotive, introduces the programme. Reynolds steps out of the cab and examines the locomotive's bogie. He points out the springs and spring mountings. Shots of the locomotive superstructure being removed from the bogie frame. Shots of the bogie unit with superstructure removed. Reynolds points out the various components (motors, king pins, transmission, etc.) Shots of a bogie stripped down to its essentials. Reynolds points out some of the stresses the bogie would undergo during its life, particularly at the welds. He goes on to explain why the designers built a perspex model of the bogie frame for tests during the design stage. Charles Newey, at the B.R. Technical Centre, Derby, looks at a static test being conducted on a full size prototype bogie frame. Bryan Lowe (British Rail) and Charles Newey discuss the use of strain gauges on perspex models in order to refine the design of the prototype bogie. They look at a perspex model of the bogie in its final form. Lowe points out the modifications which were made as a result of the strain tests. Peter Watson join the discussion. He explains why a design base ion static tests only is not sufficient. Ken Reynolds, standing in the yard at Crewe, explains how dynamic tests are carried out on experimental bogies. He enters a mobile laboratory mounted on a locomotive as he talks. Charles Newey, at the Derby laboratories, explain how data from the mobile laboratory is analysed in order to obtain a predicted life for a bogie. He uses data print outs, diagrams of welds and graphs to illustrate his points. Peter Watson discusses the use of fatigue tests on welded structures to assess the accuracy of the methods used to predict the endurance of service vehicles. He shows an example of failure of a fillet weld. Shots of a steel bridge girder undergoing tests. Hydraulic rams apply cyclic loading sequences which simulate the passage of trains over a bridge. Commentary by Newey. He points out an unexpected crack which has developed in a welded section under compression. Shots of Ken Reynolds with a stripped Class 87 locomotive bogie. He points out the modifications to the welded structure which were made as a result of the testing programme at Derby. Reynolds sums up the programme over shots of the yard at Crewe.
