Description
"The purpose of the lungs is for gas exchange - that allows oxygen to move from the inspired air into the venous blood and for the carbon dioxide to move out in the expired air''. Dr. R.J. Mi...lls of the Centre for Respiratory Investigation, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, uses a new model based computer aided technique to show us how to obtain parameters of gas exchange - useful in measuring cardiac output in patients with high blood pressure. He compares the conventional invasive procedure with the new 'non-invasive' method which he sees as a first step towards a wider application of model-based computer-aided techniques in clinical medicine.
