Footage description: Headmaster addresses his school on 'courage' during assembly. Prayers are also said and school announcements made. Headmaster in his study talks informally with a school captain over arrangements for driving lessons for pupils in the school. David Stringer discusses about the two sequences given above and assesses the language used in relation to the context. Contrast in choice of words for similar situations in the two sequences pointed out. He also poses questions about the way in which language reflects the social relationships which exists in a given situation and asks whether the same speaker is likely to speak in the same way in another context. Shot of a Maths Lesson. The teacher walks round the class and discusses the problem being solved with his pupils, asking questions and confirming answers. David Stringer compares and contrasts the last sequence with the first two in which the headmaster featured. He also points out the monopoly teacher has on language and how the picture we see helps to evaluate what we hear. David Stringer introduces an English Language lesson to show how the interchange between teacher and pupil on this occasion differs from that in the previous lesson. The pupils are divided into groups on this occasion according to sex and each group discusses what type of jobs they would like to follow after leaving school. A representative from each group then tells the class the jobs they are interested in and why, after which the teacher leads a discussion between the boys and girls over the idea of women at work and the level of responsibility of each parent in chiId raising. David Stringer points out where informal language is most pronounced and introduces a set of sixth form students playing cards in their common room. A discussion ensues among the students and the informality evoked is meant to contrast with the formal speech of the poetry lesson in which the same students are involved later. Shot of a class of sixth formers in a poetry lesson. One of them reads out a poem and attempts to evaluate it. The teacher in the background intercedes only when she wants the pupil to expound on his statement. David Stringer analyses the two sequences in which the sixth formers have featured in terms of vocabulary and setting, pointing out the reasons for the difference in style, etc. David Stringer then introduces a session in a gym to show another aspect of language usage. A shot of boys taking instructions from a teacher during P.T. Shot of a science lesson or magnetism in progress in a laboratory. The teacher asks questions and uses an occasional dialect word to solicit an answer from his pupils. David Stringer sums up the last sequence and refers to earlier sequences for instances of of similarity and contrast. Resumption of the science lesson in a laboratory. Now an experiment is being carried out with some of the pupils participating in the operation. Others look on. Shot of children leaving school. David Stringer introduces a boy from school at home with his parents taking a meal. A discussion ensues between the child and his parents to reflect the kind of subject under discussion and the use of language in another setting.
