Footage description: Norman Williams introduces the programme and lists the categories into which moral judgement can be put. He relates them to children's value judgements and the possible categories they might use. He then talks about the interviews that follow and the variety of background from which the interviewers are taken. Shot of Norman Williams interviewing Catherine. She explains what it means to be 'good', 'naughty', to 'tell lies' and to 'steal'. She gives personal interpretations to such instances and explains how she came to hold such views. The sequence reflects how children form value judgements and the influences that affect their judgement. Shot of Norman Williams and Richard Pring discussing points arising from the last sequence. They discuss the use of moral language which seems to be deceptive in that it conceals certains responses. Also discussed was the method used in classifying interviews and categorising them. The fact that all value judgements can ultimately be intuitive when new responses are obtained by further questioning is criticised. It is pointed out that children are also capable of giving intuitive judgement from the outset. Norman Williams introduces shots of more interviews. The ages of the two interviewees are given as 8 and 14. Gerard explains what he means by one being 'naughty' and 'fair'. Further questions are asked to solicit new responses from him and the types of judgement given are categorised and shown on the screen. Shot of Mame being interview by Norman Williams. Mame explains what she means by being 'fair' and to tell a lie, and when it is a good or bad thing to do the latter. Here again value judgements are categorised and flashed on the screen. Norman Williams introduces another interview. This time the judgements are not categorised but are numbered and viewers are given the opportunity to classify them themselves. Shot, of Norman Williams with John in which the latter gives examples of being 'good' & 'bad' John's reply reflects various value judgements relating to historical standards, rules, conscience and respectability. Consequently his replies cover a range of value judgements.
