Footage description: Tony Pickup introduces the programme and the two films on developmental testers engaged in the procedures of data collection. Shots of Cyril Collins explaining to a class of secondary school children how sample surveys are carried out. He then talks about the purpose of his visit, the survey that is to he carried out in which the assistance of children is required to answer questionnaires. Marie Hutchinson introduces herself and the purpose of her visit to the class. She explains what the OU is all about and how it operates and relates this with her visit. Questionnaires are then distributed to pupils. This sequence reflects a contrast in style with the previous sequence in gaining rapport. Dr. Cppenheim, Tony Pickup and the two tester form a panel. Mr. Collins talks about the problems he had in trying to gain rapport, the response of the children, and about the script he had as a guide. Mrs. Hutchinson then gave her experience. Dr. Oppenheim then comnents on the approaches of the two testers. A sequence on questionnaires is then introduced by Tony Pickup. Shot of Mr. Collins explaining in general what a questionnaire usually contains and what is required of those who complete them. He becomes more specific by telling the children about the questionnaire they are to complete. Mrs. Hutchinson reassures the class that others too are completing the questionnaires. She tells them what is expected of them, equating rightness with truth, and how the questionnaire is different from others. Mr. Collins continues his introduiction to the questionnaire to the class. He tells the pupils about the ultimate use to which the answers will be put and why. He then explains the questionnaire. Mrs. Hutchinson explains in detail how to complete the questionnaire. Mr. Collins explains to the children how to complete the questionnaire. The two sequences contrast one another. Mrs. Hutchinson mentions what problems she had hoped she would have in connection with her last sequence. Mr. Collins too gives his Dr. Oppenheim then points out pitfalls to avoid in situations of this kind. The administration and monitoring sequence is then introduced by Tony Pickup. Shot of Mrs. Hutchinson in a classroom of children. She guides them in the task of completing the questionnaire. Mr. Collins in his class sets off with the same task. Problems encountered by the two testers are given. Dr. Oppenheim talks about what to guard against when children look for guidance in answers and how best investigators can assist them. Tony Pickup concludes the programme.
