Footage description: | Opening shots show Mrs. Thatcher taking her seat on the platform at the 1972 National Union of Teachers Conference at Blackpool. After the Chairman's address, welcoming her, a number of delegates from the Rank and File group walk out. Voice over, Roger Dale explains the background to this move, which is followed by a standing ovation for Mrs. Thatcher, who then begins her speech. Roger Dale interviews Edward Short in his House of Commons office. Mr. Short gives his views on the strength of the NUT as a pressure group, and supports the idea of a General Teaching Council. Mrs. Thatcher's closing words to the N.U.T. conference; high shots of conference hall, applause. Cut to press conference which followed. The question of comprehensive schools is discussed she favours a middle school system. Dale's interview with Short continues: he explains the background to Circular I0/65 on secondary reorganisation. At the Press Conference, Stephen Jessel, Times Education Correspondent, asks about the level of resources given to education. Camera pans over cuttings of the press report which appeared next day. Sound carries extracts from Mrs. Thatcher's speech which is being reported. Final extract form the Short interview reveals his ideas on positive discrimination in resource allocation. Closing sequence shows extracts from Press Conference when Mrs. Thatcher was questioned on her reaction to the Rank and File walk out. Credits over shots of Big Ben and House of Commons. |
