Footage description: First part of the prgramme is a performance by Alex Glasgow, William Southgate and his quintet of parts of a song cycle about Tyneside life originally transmitted on BBC2 in July 1972. The sections chosen deal with school and school leavers entering work. Text of the song is reprinted in the broadcast notes. Camera tracks over still shots of ships on the Tyne, children at old state primary schools and others at modern private school, and shots of boilermakers, cranes and other industrial scenes. Roger Dale gives his own reaction to the song and questions Bill Williamson and Don Swift on theirs. Alex Glasgow explains his motives. The discussion considers how the points raised in the correspondence material relate to the song. Don Swift and Bill Williamson explain, the difference between the structural level and the socio cultural level uses of social class. Finally the discussion covers the possible ways of changing the status quo and the limited powers of the teacher and the governmental system. Credits over repeat of part of Alex Glasgow's song.
