Description
This film was made with the Richardson family who live on on of the most desirable middle class private estates on the outskirts of Nottingham. It concentrates particularly on the 12 year old daugh...ter at school and in her recreation pursuits. We see what effect the different social position of this family, compared with the one in the previous film (E351/04) has had on the opportunities and aspirations of parent and child.

Footage description: John Oates introduces the programme, voice over shots of Clifton Hall Grammar School, Nottingham. Shots of Jane Richardson playing hockey. Girls playing netball. An English class: girls discussing poems. High shot of centre of Nottingham with school in foreground. Oates explains the schools conscious efforts to compensate for the girls' urban environment: film of biology class visiting a local farm. Farmer Mr. Cod and teacher Mr. Bailey talk to the class and Bailey comments to Oates on the value of such lessons. Headmistress Miss Squire comments on the city orientation of most of the girls, and on the system of pupil representation on school government boards. Girls standing for election to these boards give election addresses to the school. Dianne is elected: a guitarist and four girls sing her campaign song. Shots of Mrs. Richardson taking her son Simon to playgroup. She comments on the independence it gives him. Shots of David Richardson at work: he is a dental technician. At home, Oates asks him how he copes with shopping and leisure activities being separated from his wife. Shots of Richardson at local camera club. Oates talks to Mark and Helen Richardson on their spare time activities: shots of Helen riding horses. David outlines his hopes for them. Jane comments on Helen's riding and Richardson enlarges on the difference between the two girls schools: Clifton Hall Grammar and Farnborough Secondary. Final sequence shows Jane's ballet classes with her instructors Miss Morrison and Miss Heard. Oates sums up, pointing out how the family overcome the limitations of the Clifton estate where they live by using the resources of the city.
