Description
In this film, which is intended as a primary element of the block, we look in some detail at two alternative schools in the city of Chicago: Cabrini Green Alternative High School, and the Learning ...Network. Both of these schools are discussed at length in the correspondence text. The aim of the film is to give the students some idea of the feeling of two radically new and challenging innovations in education: The Learning Network, as its name implies, is steeped in the ideas of Illich and Freire; Cabrini Green Alternative High School is located in one of the notorious public housing projects in Chicago.

Footage description: Programme opens with U.S. news film of riots in Chicago. Voice over David Jenkins points out that violence lingers on in Caprini Green, a black neighbourhood and home of the Alternative High School featured in this film. Armin Beck explains how the project, which gives a second chance to drop-outs from the regular schools, came into being. David Jenkins and Armin Beck comment voice over on a biology lesson at the school. Montage of shots of Caprini Green, black children in streets, squalid housing tower blocks etc. David Jenkins enlarges on the toughness of the area. Alternative High School principal Richard Ginwright talks at length on the problems of the pupils and their reaction to the school. Further scenes from the biology lesson, and a maths lesson. Armin Beck comments on the progress made by the school in its first three years. More shots of the area. Shots of West side Chicago and student entering The Learning Network, another alternative school being set up by four teachers. The rest of the programme is devoted to this. Kathy Pelietier introduces it and David Jenkins comments voice over. Kathy discusses the type of children in the school and their problems. Shots of pupils acting with her in class. Armin Beck comments on student's progress and Jenkins stresses the homely atmosphere. Teacher Luther Syas explains the problems they had in getting a suitable site, and in finding two children to talk about their feelings for the school. Syas, Jenkins and Kathy speak individually about class sizes and teacher pupil relations. Classroom scenes with Kathy teaching English. Jenkins questions whether a fee paying school such as this can really tackle problems of the dispossessed and urban poor. Kathy sums up.
