Footage description: The programme opens with a classroom scene at Woodcroft School for mentally handicapped children at Loughton, Essex. Young children are doing assessment tests with teachers. Professor P. Mittler describes the specialised scope of the school. He introduces Kitty, an eight year old handicapped girl and gives reasons for using assessment tests with her. In interview, the head of the school, Mrs. Jane Edwards, explains the role of the school. She describes the use of case conferences which enable parents to participate along with the various specialists. She explains the use of assessment tests in detail, showing how different tests are used to build up a teaching programme for each child. Animated diagram of Gunzburg's Progress Assessment Chart. In voice over, Mittler explains the four sections of the chart, describing Kitty's strengths and weaknesses in each. He also explains how teachers use the chart. Film of teacher with Kitty showing how the tests are implemented in practice. In voiceover Mittler explains how the teacher uses each test to build up a general assessment. Dr. Martin Bax, a paediatrician, gives his reasons for assessing a young child. Film of Bax in a Woodcroft School classroom. He gives an assessment of Kitty as she plays with a teacher. Bax describes the kinds of development he is looking for in Kitty. In voiceover Mittler comments on Bax's technique. Film of Bax assessing Amanda, a normal two year old, in his own clinic. Comparisons with shots of Kitty doing the same tests at Woodcroft School. Bax describes the differences in the reactions of the two children. Film of group of children at Woodcroft School. Bax explains the importance of physical health in handicapped children. Film of Bax doing a screening test on Kitty's hearing by means of different rattles. Mittler explains the reasons for this in voice-over. Bax then tests Kitty's sight by moving and throwing small balls. Film of Amanda doing the same tests with Bax, illustrating Kitty's limitations. Bax demonstrates Kitty's ability to grip objects. Unsuccessfully, he tries to interest her in pictures in a book. Film of Amanda responding positively to this test, and to another involving knocking pegs into a model. Shots showing Kitty's failure to respond to this test. Bax concludes by describing Kitty's general progress at Woodcroft School, particularly in the area of social development. He believes she is now ready to develop in other ways.
