| Footage description: | Whatley introduces 2 circuits - a simple transistor optical switch, and an operational amplifier and strain gauge bridge circuit - which 2 students will assemble during the programme. He outlines some of the difficulties involved. Whatley emphasises the importance of soldering for such experiments. Using basic home experiment kit materials, he solders some wire to pins on a board. He also does some bad soldering to show how not to do it. Close-ups of good and bad solders. Film of a pupil doing some soldering on a circuit. The film is repeated and Whatley points out the errors being made. Whatley discusses 2 further circuits students may care to assemble if they have time. The first is an example of positive feedback, demonstrating the use of a light sensitive cell. He explains the circuit diagram and shows the circuit in operation. The second circuit is similar but without any feedback. He demonstrates the circuit in operation and shows how light sensitive it is. He also demonstrates how the circuit can be extended, introducing a motor circuit. Whatley asks Van Beek how her circuit is progressing. She shows it in operation and they discuss some construction problems. Smith explains some of the problems in his circuit, which does not in fact work. Whatley suggests where he may have gone wrong. Whatley examines a completed circuit like the one Smith is assembling. He shows the strain gauge circuit in situ on a Meccano bridge and demonstrates how a meter deflects to indicate the strain. Film sequence of various strain gauge experiments being done in a school. The first is investigating compressive and tensile stresses on a bridge.
