Description
This programme shows how a technological problen can be tackled by pupils at different age and ability levels - The problem was to design and test model boats to achieve a hull shape with the lowes...t drag. He programme shows three approaches, a junior school which, was a piece of plastic guttering, rough solid wood boat shapes and a stop watch, a secondary school who designed end built a full scale canoe based on tests in a long tank using a semi-automatic testing procedure involving an electronic timer, and another secondary school where instead of timing the speed of a model along the water trough, they used a strain gauge to monitor hull drag directly. As a contrast brief excerpts of the work of the Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory are used to show what can be done given the full resources of science and industry. The programme is introduced by John Whatley of the Open University.
