Description
This is the second of the two plays written specially for E201 by Brian Clark. It is based on real cases and examines the differences in perceptions of events in a classroom in a modern comprehens...ive school. A teacher alleges that a girl has hit her, the girl denies it, and her schoolfriend claims the blow was in self-defence. There is also the view of the girl's mother and a sensationalised version from a schoolboy. The Headmaster (Julian Curry) has the job of taking action in the issue. The programme raises several issues which cause controversy in education today. Traditional ideas about discipline, "standards", and the roles of authority are all called into question by the programme, which provides stimulating material for discussion about the methods and even the purposes of education.

Footage description: | The first scene shows a school teacher, played by Katherine Stark, giving her version of a classroom incident in which a girl has struck her, to the headmaster, who is played by Julian Curry. The incident is shown taking place as she recalls it. The girl involved, Jean, played by Gillian Wright, has an interview with the headmaster along with her mother, who is played by Margaret Heery. The incident is reconstructed from Jean's point of view. Sandra, Jean's friend, played by Marcia Johnson, gives her view of the affair to the headmaster. A staff room argument about the affair is witnessed, after which teacher and pupil together see the headmaster, who suspends Jean for a fortnight. His recap of the day's events shows that he too has a distorted version of what happened. The play ends showing Jean resolving to leave the school. |
