Description
This is an observational programme in which three children, Kate, Richard and Sandra, who were all from the same class in a junior school, do a psychological test of impulsivity. They are tested in... the studio by Ann Floyd of the Open University and the programme also contains primary source material from an early OU programme, in which the same children are shown at age 10 (approximately) doing the same test material. The programme examines the differences in impulsiveness, reflectivity and personality shown by the three children at two stages in their growing up. It provides data about children's behaviour in a controlled situation, and can be used as the basis of discussion for teachers and parents.

Footage description: The programme opens with Ann Floyd chatting to Kate Cole Adams, who is 14 years old. Floyd explains in voice over that Kate will be given a Kagan test, which she last took when aged 9. An extract from E 281/01 shows Kate being tested at age 9 by Asher Cashdan. The Kagan test involves matching a drawing of an every day object with one exactly the same, which is placed with five drawings only slightly different from the original. Kate is now tested by Ann Floyd. The test is exactly the same and the results are compared with those of four years ago. The test looks at speed of reply, rather than the accuracy of the answer. Another child, Richard, is seen being tested by Asher Cashdan in the extract from E281/O1 Richard is now tested by Floyd. A third child, Sandra, is seen being given the test by Cashdan. The results are compared with her performance at age 14, seen in the studio with Ann Floyd. Richard explains to Floyd how he approached the test. Kate does likewise, and then all three children are observed taking a test specially devised for the programme.
