Tiie Adelaide Centre in N.W.London is attended each day by a dozen adolescents who have dropped out of school. The full time staff are a team of three social workers and a teacher, and most of the ...children attend for about a year. The Centre is concerned with both emotional and educational problems. Each day begins and ends with a discussion meeting, while educational activities occupy the rest of the time. This programme shows a selection of events over a 3 day period in November, 1975. It is divided into six sequences covering morning and afternoon group discussion meetings, educational activities and a staff meeting with the psychiatrist. The broadcast notes are very important, providing background material essential to full understanding of the programme.

| Footage description: | The programme opens with shots of the Adelaide Centre, over which a narrator explains the purpose of the centre. The programme covers three consecutive days in November, 1975. A discussion between staff and boys at the centre is observed. Jenny Jackson, the team leader, and her assistants Chris Meisinger and Gary Dixon, try to stimulate group discussion of a particularly uncooperative boy, Barry. Film of another group discussion, in which another problematic youngster, Craig, is questioned by the staff about his behaviour. The discussion broadens to include consideration of how Barry, who is absent, can also be helped. In this session the staff are joined by Max Hunt, the Centre's educational tutor. Film of educational activities at the centre. Staff are seen trying to persuade the boys to try maths and English. A lesson in guitar playing meets with more success. Group discussion of Craig and Barry, both of whom are absent. Staff, and to a lesser extent the boys, suggest how Craig and Barry can be helped. The four members of staff meet with Harold Behr, a psychiatrist, and Jill Cook, the Senior Day Care Officer. Behr and Cook question the staff on their attitudes towards the boys, and suggest how these might be improved. The final sequence shows another group discussion, this time with Craig present. His behaviour is again the subject of discussion, especially a recent act of delinquency. Craig is uncooperative and the boys as a whole contribute little. |
