Description
Harry Bragg, Headmaster of Bower Grove School, takes a group of slow learners through a range of diagnostic tests. Five children from Bower Grove School are seen being tested in psychomotor and lan...guage skills. Included are tests based on those designed by Stott to assess gross motor skills (jumping, ball bouncing and catching), fine motor skill (bilateral manipulative tests), and language comprehension (Reynell Verbal Comprehension). The film demonstrates some of the key learning difficulties of slow learning children. Having tested some of the children, Bragg also carries out remedial work in both manipulative and language skills. Remedial work in the former category involves breaking down a particular task into its component skills for ease of mastery. Remedial work in the language area involves use of the Bell and Howell Language Master. This television programme provides the correspondence text with visual material, giving the student an opportunity to observe for an extended period of time the behaviour of slow learners. At one point in the film, time is deliberately stretched so that a child's reactions can be observed as well as his actual test performance.

Footage description: The programme opens with Harry Bragg, headmaster of Bower Grove ESN School in Kent, testing the motor skill of Billy, one of his pupils. Billy is seen jumping over a bar, after which Bragg introduces the programme. Bragg gives Billy further tests, in which he jumps sideways and bounces a ball. Stephen is seen doing the same tests as Billy, though with less success. Bragg shows a remedial activity to improve ball-bouncing. Beverly's fine motor skills are tested by means of sticks and small wooden balls, which have to be placed in a tray using fingers or tweezers. Jean is seen doing the same tests of fine motor skill, as well as another involving simultaneous threading. Timothy is seen doing the Reynell Verbal Comprehension Scale, matching descriptions to objects, using models of animals, cups, pennies etc. He practises pronunciation on the Language Master, which uses picture cards with descriptions recorded on a piece of magnetic tape. Edward works on the Language Master.
