Footage description: The programme starts with shots of a medical tutorial, over which Bruce MacGillivray, Dean of the Royal Free School of Medicine, briefly describes how long it takes to train a doctor. Outside a London surgery a patient, Mrs. Collinson, argues that there are too few doctors. Film of a meeting of the B.M.A Junior Hospital Staff Committee Working Party on medical manpower. David Wardle argues that since 1972 too many doctors have been produced. In interview economist Alan Maynard outlines the development of official estimates for medical manpower since 1945. Further footage of Wardle's meeting, in which he decribes the limited employment prospects of junior hospital doctors. Shots of medical students' practical and tutorial work, over which Macgillivray explains the significance for planners of the large number of women doctors. Interview with Pamela Fenney, at her Paddington surgery. She describes the kind of service the practice operates. One of her patients is interviewed about the service at the practice. Fenney mentions shortages of doctors in the psychiatric and geriatric areas. Michael Green, a consultant geriatrician, is filmed treating a patient. He then explains to Woodhall the sigificance of the shortage of geriatricians. Woodhall interviews John Brothwood, Senior Principal Medical Officer, DHSS Medical Manpower. He explains his approach to problems in the supply of doctors. Brief extract from Green's interview. He suggests one solution to the shortage of geriatricians. Brothwood explains how vacant posts are filled, and how the Todd Report is used to plan staffing levels. Members of the B.M.A. Junior Hospital Staff Committee discuss the inadequacies of the Todd Report. Alan Maynard compares medical manpower planning with that used for teachers, and explains how the existing numbers of doctors might practice more efficiently. In interviews Fenney comments on Maynard's suggestion, and Green shows how the shortage of chiropodists affects geriatricians. Maynard then advocates regular revision of staffing forecasts and offers alternative methods of reducing the supply of doctors. The programme ends with further queries of the Todd Report from the junior hospital doctors.
