Description
Deviance in the classroom is a major area of contention in education today part of the problem being the enormous variation in the ways this conflict between teachers and children is perceived. The... perceptions often diverge even more widely when, as in the area where the film was shot, racism is an issue in the schools. This film explores these perceptions in comprehensive schools in one area of London. Among the speakers are a headmaster, a head of pastoral care, a sanctuary unit tutor, an education welfare officer, several (suspended) adolescents, and the members of an Educational Support Team. In addition there is an interview with a sixteen year old girl whose deviance was extreme shyness, she was placed for several years in an ESN school and then moved directly to Further Education College where she is "now making up for three wasted years". William (of the title) was labelled as a deviant troublemaker as a result he found that even new teachers "don't have no regards for William therefore".
