Footage description: The programme opens with shots of St. Peter's School, Rickmansworth, over which Merritt introduces the programme. It is divided into 5 sequences. In the first of these teacher Brenda Underwood teaches five year olds to recognise the letter B. Methods used include naming objects beginning with B, writing the letter in sand and picture-making of named objects. Underwood uses cards to help two children distinguish vowels, and teaches a group to make words plural. Merritt adds his comments in voice-over at intervals, continues with Underwood using cards to help children distinguish between words beginning with pl-. The next section shows the use of hand written charts in the classroom. Carley Lloyd-Davies helps children to follow instructions and to write their names. Children are seen collecting and drinking milk, over which Merritt comments on the use of such activities as learning opportunities. Sequence 4 shows children planting seeds and then using this as a subject to read about. Merritt comments over. Sequence 5 shows Lloyd-Davies introducing children to books, and ends with them using the school's small Library. Merritt sums up.
