Footage description: Over shots of a group of fifth formers and a teacher watching a TV documentary, Maybin introduces the programme. She explains that they have watched two short films, one of which portrays a housing estate favourably, the other unfavourably. There follows a prolonged group discussion of the films which is directed by the teacher. They discuss evidence of bias, analyse the techniques used to present a biassed viewpoint, and discuss their reactions to the films. Eventually, they discuss the problem of bias in general. Over shots of the group reading a text about violence amongst young people, Maybin introduces the second half of the programme. The detailed discussion of the specific techniques used in presenting a biassed viewpoint is now applied to the text. They discuss stereotyping, selection, omission etc and attempt to portray the writer of the article. This leads on to discussion of their own use of stereotypes, and to the question of the effects of bias. Finally, Maybin asks what can be learnt from such discussions.
