Footage description: Film shots of a baby in a neo-natal intensive care unit suffering from Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Commentary by Reynolds and Eliot describes the condition. Eliot explains the differences in the breathing of normal babies and those suffering from the Syndrome. Diagrams of the lungs and alveoli. Scanning electron micrograph of an alveola. Photominographs of sections of normal and diseased lung tissue of babies. Eliot uses a graph to show levels of sulphactants in the fetal lung fluid during pregnancy. The levels of lecithin and sphingomyelin are shown. He discusses their measurement. Eliot then describes a method, amniocentesis, for obtaining samples of the fetal lung fluid. Diagrams of the mother showing the fetus. Film shots of amniocentesis being performed on a pregnant patient. Commentary by Eliot and the surgeon. Film shots of a sonogram being taken of the fetus inside the mother. The technique is explained. More film shots of the amniocentesis. Shots of the sample fluid being tested by paper chromatography for the amount of sulfactants present. Reynolds and another doctor explain the technique used to discover the presence of asphixia in a baby before and during delivery. Film shots of a blood sample being taken from the baby's scalp while it is still in the womb. Shots of blood sample being tested on a pH meter. Reynolds explains the criteria for deciding when a pre-mature delivery should be induced and also what method should be used. Shots of a cesarian section being performed. Commentary by Eliot and the surgeon explains each step of the operation. Possibility that cesarian section may be a contributory cause of hyaline membrane disease discussed briefly. Reynolds describes some additional problems which arise through the presence of the disease. Schematic, animated diagrams of the newborn baby's circulatory system and X-rays of its lungs are used by Eliot to explain how hyaline membrane disease can cause reversion to fetal circulation in the infant. Eliot discusses possible treatment of the disease. Film shots of baby receiving treatment, (artificial respiration, etc.) Film shots of a doctor examining the baby during treatment. Eliot explains the necessity for continuous monitoring of the oxygen uptake of a baby during treatment. Film shots show oxygen uptake being monitored. Reynolds continues the commentary. More film shots of the technique. Eliot sums up.
