Description
This is the final programme in the section of the course which is concerned with the population explosion in India, and it is introduced by Hedy Brown, Lecuter in Social Psychology at the Open Uni...versity. It focuses upon the study of the psychological processes involved in the difflusion and acceptance of change by looking at the introduction of family planning methods in India. Hedy Brown describes the dimensions of the problem facing India. The role of the mass media in changing the climate of opinion towards innovation is examined. It is concluded that they supply the initial information and create an awareness of the problem which may be built upon through interpersonal communications. Film is introduced to demonstrate the wide variety of strategies used in the implementation of family planning policy. This sequence includes an extract from an Indian Government cartoon on family planning. Hedy Brown then talks to Dr Kashyap, Medical Advisor to the Indian High Commissioner in London,who was previously in charge of family planning in India. Dr Kashyap describes in detail the local and national strategies employed by the Indian Government to persuade people to adopt family planning measures. Hedy Brown then hands over to the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Michael Drake, who concludes the Social Sciences Foundation Course.
