Footage description: Arthur Coxall, Desmond Lavery and Elaine Lavery, all profoundly deaf, perform a roleplay about the problems of communication between a deaf teenager and her hearing brother and father. The sign language used in the role play is interpreted by Phil Bobbins in voice over. Discussion between the group, which comprises eight deaf people, one hard of hearing man and two social workers, about the problems that confront deaf people in their relationships with hearing people in their families. They discuss the steps parents of deaf children can take to help, and what deaf people themselves can do to make their problems better understood by others. Role-play by Cyril Robbins, Valerie Jacks, Judith Webb, Keith Hutchins and Carole Tweedy. They portray a situation involving a teacher with two deaf children. Phil Bobbins interprets the sign language used in the role-play. The group then discuss their own education and give their views on education for deaf children. They suggest ways of improving teaching methods for both deaf and hard of hearing children. Phil Bobbins interprets in vioce-over. Third role-play, concerning a deaf girl's first day at work, and the lack of understanding and impatience she encounters. The participants are Alfred Fox, who is hard-of-hearing, Valerie Jacks, Desmond Lavery, Judith Webb and Carole Tweedy. The group discuss their own experiences of work and of relationships with hearing people at work. Bobbins interprets throughout. Role play about courtship. Keith Hutchins, Desmond Lavery, Carole Tweedy and Valerie Jacks play two hearing boys and two deaf girls at a dance. The role play shows the reactions of the boys after discovering the girls are deaf. Bobbins interprets. (voice over) The group discuss their own experiences of courtship. The discussion opens out to consider the wider question of social relationships with the hearing world at large. They discuss the differences between the deaf world and the hearing world. The discussion is interpreted by Phil Dobbins. The programme ends with shots of the silhouettes of two deaf people communicating by means of sign language.
