Footage description: | Film of pre-school children playing in the grounds of Beech Green Nursery School, Aylesbury. In voice over Phillip Williams introduces the school, along with two of its physically handicapped children - Gary, who has cerebral palsy, and Amanda, who is almost totally blind. In interview Mrs Lloyd, the headmistress, explains why the school takes several handicapped children. She gives details of how Amanda and Gary have integrated with the school. Shots of the two children playing. Film of Gary and Amanda with a group of children engaged in various structured and non-structured school activities. Mrs.Lloyd describes the kinds of attitude the school tries to adopt towards its handicapped children. She explains how her staff operate, and to what ends. Film of a case conference between various of the school's staff and educational and medical advisers. They assess Gary's development with a view to deciding whether or not he should attend a normal school. Interview with Gary's mother, who describes the degree of consultation she has had with the various experts. She gives her opinion of the decision to send him to normal school. Over shots of Amanda at home her father gives his views on the decision to send Amanda to a special school for the blind. Shots of the special school, showing the facilities. Film of Queens Park School, Bedford, a primary school which takes some physically handicapped children. In voice-over, Williams describes the school, and introduces Emma, a young child with spina bifida. Interview with the headmistress, Miss Harold, who gives her reasons for taking some handicapped children, such as Emma. Film of teacher with Emma and other children in class. In interview Miss Harold explains the importance of treating the disabled children in a responsible manner, so as to help them integrate with the other children. Film of Emma doing exercises in the school gym. The programme concludes with an interview with Miss Harold. She advises other schools on what to do to enable them to take handicapped children successfully. |
