Description
This programme is part of a "systems" case study in containerisation. Lyn Jones, Lecturer in Systems at the Open University, examines the question: "What determines which ports are a...llowed to build container berths?". He compares the Royal Docks in London with the container terminal at Tilbury. He interviewed Noel Ordman Assistant Director-General of the Port of London Authority, who explains why they containerised Tilbury. He also interviewed Kerry St. Johnston, Managing Director of Overseas Container Ltd., and asked him why his firm chose Tilbury for the Australian trade and a different port for the Far East trade. The programme illustrates some of the factors essential in decision making and why the decision to build a new container berth can no longer be made without committment from a shipping company, Lyn Jones puts all this in context using the systems diagram approach in the Course Unit.
