Description
The film is an "excursion through Paris", starting at the present day and then going through the period from the 1880s to 1914. It consists of a montage of paintings (by contemporary arti...sts: Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet, Redon, Picasso etc.) photographs, engravings and posters, together with some archive film, accompanied by the music of Debussy, Satie, Chabrier and Stravinsky and a variety of contemporary quotes and observations.

Footage description: Music, chiefly by Debussy, but also by Satie, Chabrier and Stravinsky, is heard throughout the programme. The opening shots are from a Paris Metro train as it enters a station. Over views of the city from the Metro and of general street scenes Philip comments on the cultural life of Paris at the turn of the century. Old prints depict Parisian scenes. Numerous prints and paintings of cafe life, over which contemporary opinions of cafes and drink are read. Photograph of Debussy. View of the Academie des Beaux Arts, over which opinions about the conservative nature of the salons are quoted.Old-fashioned works by Bonguereau are shown. Further portraits of Debussy, over which Philip briefly describes Debussy's trip to Rome. Pictures of bomb damage, over which Philip describes the rise of political violence in late 19th century Paris. Over impressionistic works by Turner and Monet he briefly outlines the growth of artistic experimentation. Contemporary opinions of new artistic styles are read over works by Odilon Redon and Gaugin. Caption: '1889 Exposition Universelle'. Film of Javanese musicians and dancers, whose influence on Debussy is described. Debussy's own reaction to oriental music is quoted over five of Hokusai's 'Thirty-six views of Mt. Fuji'. Film of the sea, and the treatment of the sea by Turner and Monet. A quotation from Satie is read which relates Debussy's work to that of the impressionists. La Mer is played throughout. (music) Caption: 'Le Cabaret'. Many posters advertising cabaret are seen, with numerous contemporary opinions of the cabaret read over. Prints show early cinema, then an early film is seen briefly. Debussy's reaction to cinematography is quoted. Short extract from another early film showing men at work. Print of workers, over which mention is made of workers becoming subjects for art. Caption: '1900 Exposition Universelle'. Montage of film excerpts and stills portray this event. Quotations give contemporary reactions to it. Print and film of the early Metro, again with popular reactions quoted over. Shots of African masks, over which Philip comments on the arrival of cubism and Stravinsky. Numerous cubist works, with music, over. Debussy's reaction to these innovations is quoted, Street scenes in present day Paris, over which Philip describes the end of 'La Belle Epoque'.
