Footage description: Robert Philip briefly explains the object of the programme in voice over. An extract from the fifth Act of Beaumarchais' play The Marriage of Figaro is performed. It takes the form of a monologue by Figaro in which he bemoans his fate. Exactly the same scene is performed as it appears in Mozart's opera, Act IV. Part of Beaumarchais' Act III is performed, in which Suzanne agrees to meet the Count in the garden. Mozart's version of the scene is performed. Part of Act II of the play is performed. It begins with the Count's discovery of Suzanne in the Countess' dressing room and ends shortly after the entry of Figaro. Two extracts from the same scene in the opera are performed.
