Footage description: The programme opens with prints of 18th century London over which H C Robbins Landon describes Haydn's success in London. Two portraits of Haydn are shown, followed by a handbill announcing the first performance of his l04th symphony. From the studio Landon describes the editions of the symphony that were published by J P Salomon. The frontispieces of these editions are shown. Landon explains that the programme will examine extracts from the second edition. He introduces The Acadamy of Ancient Music, a sextet who are in the studio to play the extra on l8th century instruments. They play the introduction to the first movement, after which Landon comments on its theme particularly the use of fifths. His remarks are illustrated by the pianist. The exposition of the first movement is played by the whole sextet. Landon describes the development section of the first movement. He explains the use of fifths which are illustrated on the piano. The full ensemble then play the development section. Landon describes the second, slow movement, concentrating on its opening section. The very first phrase is played on the piano to illustrate the use of a fifth, then the complete opening section is played by all the musicians. Landon comments on the first edition of Haydn's London symphony which was introduced for a trio rather than an orchestra. Again he explains how the minuet uses a theme based on a fifth. The minuet is playeby a trio. Landon describes Haydn's use of gypsy themes in both his 103rd and 104th symphonies. These are illustrated by the pianist-and the violinist. He comments on the effects achieved by Haydn's continual use of fifths. The whole sextet play the finale of the London Symphony .
