Description
Ossie Hanfling explains Wittgenstein's Picture Theory of Meaning and the Ostensive Theory of Meaning, and shows why he thinks that Wittgenstein rejected them, eventually concluding that there is no... simple answer to the problems of how words acquire meaning. Some account of the work of the Vienna Circle, and the basic tenets of Logical Positivism is also given.

He was determined to finish the Philosophical Investigations - the work which would be his masterpiece and which would dominate the philosophical landscape of the twentieth century. It was in Rosroe in Connemara that hoped he would be able to bring the Philosophical Investigations to a conclusion. But it was not to be.

This programme is intended to make viewers more aware of the various ways in which ...pictures nay be used to support assertions, especially on television. Oswald Hanfling, Lecturer in Philosophy at The Open University, discusses a number of pictures and sequences, mainly from other A101 television programmes, and distinguishes some of the different relations between pictures and words, in particular how pictures may support words as proof, evidence illustration or background.
