Description
Using sequences from 'Family Life' a feature film produced by Tony Garnett and directed by Kenneth Loach, Tom Sorell examines the philosophers concept of freedom and personhood. Sequences from the ...film show the circumstances which lead to a young girl called Jan accepting her parent's demand that she has an abortion when she becomes pregnant. The question is does Jan act intentionally? Does Jan act freely? Tom Sorell's argument is that Jan being free doesn't reduce in philosophical terms to Jan acting intentionally. He demonstrates that the connection between freedom and personhood can be seen when a conflict arises between what one does intentionally and what one most values. He also discusses 'habit' and conditions which make Jan unfree and explains her claim to her boyfriend when she says "You see Tim, when it comes to making a decision it just doesn't feel real. I don't feel there's a me that I can choose for."
