Description
In this programme Chris Emlyn-Jones introduces a whole range of Roman remains and then shows how, in the specific case of Augustus, we can use both coins and the remains of buildings as historical ...evidence. The programme concentrates on Augustus' buildings in the city of Rome, and we see how he completed the Roman Forum, and the forum of his adoptive father Julius Caesar, as a prelude to shifting the focus of Roman military and judicial life to his own forum, with its dominating Temple of Mars Ultor, within which he sought to establish his own place in the lineage of noble Romans. The Ara Pacis is examined and its symbolic significance explained and finally the programme looks at the Mausoleum of Augustus, as an expression of his unfulfilled dynastic aspirations.
