Description
The need for power was one of the most fundamental for the expanding industries of the 18th and 19th centuries. water power was the first answer, but the geographical limitations led to the develop...ment of steam power in the growing industrial centres. In this programme, Donald Cardwell takes a personal look at the rise of the big workhouses of the industrial revolution and the buildings that housed them. Shot on several locations throughout Britain, where stationary steam engines survive, lovingly maintained by enthusiasts, the programme gives an impression of size and scale on 19th century power requirements, and ends with Professor Cardwell reminding us that steam and water power are just as important today.
