Description
This programme examines the development of the steam locomotive from its origins in the decade before Victoria's reign to the Midland Compound at the very end of her reign. Several famous locomotiv...es have been filmed in steam, including the oldest working locomotive in Britain 'Lion' and the replica of Stephenson's 'Rocket'. Other engines were filmed at the National Railwat Museum in York along with interesting developments in coach design. An important section of the programme is devoted to the Stirling Single-Wheeler which was steamed on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The film contains unique footage of the Midland Compound prior to its departure at the head of a British Rail special from York to Rochdale.
