Description
This programme visits cemeteries in Manchester, London and the Buckinghamshire countryside, to point out the evidence they provide of Victorian attitudes to death and burial. An examination of memo...rials (including some in Westminster Abbey) mourning paraphenalia and coffin design illuminates the nature of life and death in a changing society. The programme examines the impact on industrialisation and secularisation. Julien Litten of the Victoria and Albert Museum discusses mourning and undertaking practices of the 19th century.
