Description
This programme looks at The National gallery in Trafalgar Square which opened in 1838. Public money was used to set up a National Collection therefore the nature of what Art was displayed became a... public debate. Victorian attitude to art of the past and what value it had to contemporary society tells us much about Victorian culture.The programme also looks at the controversies surrounding the acquisition of early Italian paintings.
