This programme looks in detail at two paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby: 'a lecture on the Orrery' and 'The Alchemist'. The programme firmly locates Wright in the Enlightenment, as an artist inte...rested in the scientific and philosophical issues of the day, aware of precedents for his work, but with a need to sell his paintings in the market place. The programme also includes a demonstration of an orrery, and a short sequences of other pictures by Wright in the Derby Art Gallery. There is some discussion of three other Wright paintings 'An Experiment on the Bird in the Airpump', 'The Blacksmith's Shop', and 'Hermit studying Anatomy'.
